Visitor Experience: This exhibit macroscopically shows how molecules interact in different states. As a solid the bonds between molecules are strong enough to keep the structure rigid. As energy is added though a solid becomes liquid, a state where the molecules form temporary bonds but frequently break apart only to bond again with other molecules. The energy in the system is not great enough to overcome gravity though so the molecules still remain at the bottom of the chamber. In the exhibit molecules are modeled by blue pucks with embedded magnets. The pucks naturally bond together forming square lattice shapes. The visitor pulls on the rope to add energy to the system. With just a little movement the pucks still stay rigidly bonded together as a solid would. As the visitors pulls the rope more vigorously, greater energy is imparted to the system and the molecules break apart and start to behave like a liquid.
