Exhibit:
"Land
Like a Cat"
Venue: "Sport" Show, Ontario Science
Centre
Location: Toronto, Canada
Date: May, 1990
Client: Ontario Science Centre
Contributors: Matthew Bates in the employ of OSC
(programming, interface electronics), OSC design and fabrication
(housing)
Client's Requirements:
The concept was to give insight into the science of "impact"
in a fun and educational way. Visitors are asked to jump
as softly as possible from the height of a couple of feet.
Their impact curve is displayed and feedback given on
their g-force at maximum.
Fulfillment: The prompting graphics were created
using flip frame animation techniques on an Amiga computer
- cutting edge technology at the time. The visitor is
weighed as they stand on top of the platform. The data
from the impact is gathered from another strain gauge
weigh scale during landing. Dividing through by the weight
gives the g-force making the exhibit work equally well
for people of any weight. The impact measurements, data
calculations and program flow control is orchestrated
with a small microprocessor and custom interface electronics.
Interesting Features:
This exhibit remains as one of the more popular exhibits
in the OSC permanent collection. Duplicates have been
sold to two other science museums for which Mystus Interactus
was awarded the fabrication contract. It is also part
of the traveling "Sport" Show, which has visited
many Science Centres throughout North America.
