Exhibit:
"Shadow
Carousel"
Venue: "Gentle Step" Show, Bata Shoe
Museum
Location: Toronto, Canada
Date: May, 1994
Client: MC Squared Design
Contributors: Mystus Interactus
Client's Requirements: We needed something to
bring a sense of motion to the hall and create an atmosphere
of whimsy for the ballroom stage.
Fulfillment by Mystus: A carousel of dancing silhouettes
was created. Dancing couples are seen whisking by the
ballroom doors. The carousel was a strictly mechanical
installation. The main components include seven 2' cutouts,
a rotating turntable, a geared down motor, a projection
lamp, a large circular bearing and a system of belt drives.
The framework is constructed in ¾" plywood
and welded metal rod. The speed of the rotation proved
to be critical for the effect and the hardest to achieve.
Interesting Features: Though a mechanical device,
this ran continuously without failure for two years until
the show was dismantled. The "Gentle Step" was
a landmark exhibit for the museum, and internationally
in the atmospheric/environmental genre.
