Determining Orbits
Determining Orbits is a real gem. This comes from an original Mystus
concept. We wanted to give the visitor the experience of doing
science; making observations, and analyzing them. The subject here
is astronomy. Visitors find the 'hot spot on the room with their
receiver and take measurements. With a very cool monitor based
interface they push play with the seemingly random and unrelated
observations to discover, much to their surprise, a beautiful
sinusoidal curve popping out all of a sudden. They discover that
this is the period of the rotating system they had found and can walk
over to the rotating transmitter to see if they were right. Mystus
developed an ultrasonic transmitter for this exhibit that works up to
200 ft. Sorry no more details on how we did it. That's a secret. A
great exhibit for talking about the process of science. So that's
what astronomers are doing with their telescopes.
